Sharing Life and the Joy of Teaching
Foothill’s Mom and Daughter Team

When Cindy Burris began teaching kindergarten 17 years ago at Foothill, she rather suspected that her daughter, Jennifer, would do something in life that would involve children. She never imagined that they would be colleagues in education at the same school.

Cindy recalls watching her daughter “play teacher” in the classroom after school. “She would line-up her dolls and teach them. It was comical because I could see that she was imitating me.”

Jennifer entered the first grade in 1992, the same year her mom began teaching at Foothill, continuing on through the 8th grade. There was something very special about being on campus with her mother. Jennifer saw first-hand her mom’s talent for teaching, her love for children and her creative ability to make the classroom an exciting place to learn.

When Jennifer attended Life Pacific College following high school, she majored in Christian Education while working part-time at Foothill in Childcare. In September 2008, when a sixth grade teaching position became available, Jennifer eagerly applied and was offered the position. Cindy said that her daughter is a “natural for the classroom” because she thinks like a teacher and “loves the experience of teaching and interacting with her students.”

Jennifer said that it’s a joy to work with her Mom, “especially because she’s always there for me with support and words of encouragement.”
