Randy Champion
FCS Grandparent

Why would Randy Champion, an FCS grandfather, give-up a weekend to wear his “grubbies,” and delve into a heavy-duty plumbing project here at the school for no pay? According to his daughter, Suzy Esquivel, he did it for love.

Suzy says that Randy’s love for FCS took hold in the early 80s when he and his wife, Pam, had to make a hard decision. Both fully engaged in their careers, they were blessed with parents who were close by to help take care of the kids while Randy and Pam were at work. But when the grandparents moved out of state, it was time to find a private school that would provide strong academics, a safe environment and a loving atmosphere with Christian values.

So in 1981 they enrolled “Little Randy” in preschool and Suzy into the 4th grade at Foothill. Today many of our families know Suzy as not only a staff member in the Development Office, but also as a mom with twins, Brooke and Blake in second grade and daughter, Bree, who works in childcare.

Suzy said that her parents selected Foothill because they wanted to make sure that she and her brother would grow in their knowledge of God and have a strong relationship with Him. “While the folks were at work, this school would also provide great childcare for those long hours between 7:30AM to 5PM every day.”

Now—nearly 30 years later---Randy continues to work fulltime as general manager of Mar-Co Equipment, where he has been employed since 1973.  Pam has worked in construction for over 30 years and now provides professional consulting services to a number of companies.  Still busy in their careers, they remain two of our school’s most devoted grandparents. Often they escape detection, “preferring to volunteer behind the scenes,” as Suzy says.

Whether it’s Grandparents Day, the Annual Fund dinner or the Annual Charity Golf Classic, you’ll find them involved in some capacity. Always available with helping hands and open hearts. As school superintendent, Bo Gutzwiller said, “They’re the kind of grandparents who help make this school great.” Is it any wonder why they’re truly Champions?
